GPS only
Wheel speed sensor only
GPS+ sensor fusion
The decision between a traditional speed sensor or GPS is now simple as every Monit G-Series has the capability, built right into the electronics, to operate on either. Run on GPS alone, or speed sensor alone, or use GPS+ technology to give you the power of both. Switching between them is easy, simply turn the GPS on or off in the menu as you please.
The GPS receiver inside the G-Series is extremely sensitive, much more powerful than any typical sat-nav device. Combined with an external roof mounted antenna, the precision receiver is able to deliver accurate distance and speed measurements almost anywhere in the world
However with any vehicle mounted GPS system there are some limitations. When travelling though extremely dense forest, tunnels or around tall buildings, the GPS signal can be degraded reducing accuracy. For many contractors this will rarely be an issue, but for those who regularly operate in difficult environments or require very high accuracy this performance loss may be unacceptable.
To address situations where lock is lost, Monit has developed its unique GPS+ technology which combines signals from a traditional speed sensor and the GPS receiver to automatically compensate for any areas where signal is lost.
1. While a good satellite signal is available the rally computer operates from GPS alone. In the background the GPS+ software continuously calibrates the wheel sensor against the GPS measurements.
2. If the satellite signal is lost the GPS+ software automatically switches operation to the wheel sensor. Accurate measurements will continue uninterrupted.
3. When the satellite signal is restored operation seamlessly switches back to GPS.
Note: If no wheel sensor is connected the unit will add the straight line distance between where the GPS signal is lost and regained instead.
Monit G-Series includes the ability to disable the GPS system completely. When this is done it will operate from a wheel speed sensor just like a traditional tripmeter. Connecting to a vehicle speed sensor (VSS) or installing a wheel probe, provides a direct connection to the ground and distance travelled.
Currently still the most popular method of connection for road surveying and highway maintenance engineers.
